The Park owes its name (Park of the Carnic hills) to its gentle slopes and
sunny hills covered in meadows and woodlands. It is situated at a low altitude
and can be visited all year round. The trails are all easy and can even
be trekked on a fine day in winter, although excursions may not be possible
in some icy areas. Spring is the best time for admiring the flora, but autumn
colours also offer a spectacle of rare beauty. It is the ideal place for
cultural and nature excursions for people of all ages. A network of trails,
some undergoing restoration, take you past sites of both natural and historical
interest, open views and unusual sights. Some of these tracks are
also for mountain biking and the famous “Gran Fondo” race is held here.
Excursions on horseback are also available, from the stables inside the
Pineta di Villa Santina, which also organize hippotherapy activities. And
in Villa Santina don’t miss a guided visit to the blockhouse of the Vallo del
Littorio, an imposing tunnel fortification, hidden in the vegetation of the
Intermunicipal Park of the Hills of Carnia and an integral part of the defence
complex built in the Carnia area during the Second World War.
The spectacular gorge of the Vinadia torrent is flanked by walls soaring up to nearly 200 metres in height, and it is a genuine natural monument in Carnia. The itinerary snakes past waterfalls, small lakes, and stretches of rocky walls which are so narrow that at times they block your view of the sky.
